We produce enough food to feed 10 billion people. So why are people still hungry?
During the farm tours of my nano hybrid Aquaponics food growing gardens and in my training workshops, a question that I was often asked and one that many research tanks raised was
“How do we feed 7 Billion people?”
Upon further research, I discovered that we produce enough food to feed 10 billion people. Really!
So why does hunger still exist?
There appear to be several reasons why despite producing enough food to feed 10 billion people, we are unable to feed the current world population of 6 billion and eliminate hunger:
- Inefficient food storage facilities and lack of cold storage that results in a large percentage of food being wasted and inedible as it cannot be kept fresh.
- Consolidation of farms away from dense population areas results in additional costs to transport food to where people live there by increasing both the cost as well as spoilage
- Food packaging in the developed counties is usually catered to larger portion sizes that contain “perfect” looking food, no imperfect shapes, blemishes, or damaged areas thereby discarding a large percentage of the harvest.
- Government policy in terms of aid and incentives to grow or not grow certain types of food also can contribute to their being shortages of a balanced variety of food
- Climate change and natural disasters are becoming an increasing barrier to being able to ensure that there is local food security. Further, rapid urbanization and increasing population concentration has resulted in significant loss of local farmland. The resulting planed urban development (PUD) community rules have also reduced the land that can be utilized to grow food in favor of green grass lawns.
So this is why many people are still hungry.
Given all these factors, it is understandable why, even though we produce enough food to feed 10 billion people, we continue to have hunger!
As a solution let’s look into building sustainable local food gardens to end hunger.
Feed Hunger Now looking for a solution to end hunger
